Free Add Page Numbers to PDF
This free tool adds page numbers to a PDF. Choose a position at the top or bottom, a style such as 1, Page 1 or Page 1 of 10, and the number to start from, then download the numbered file. The original text and images are untouched because the numbers are stamped on top. Your upload is deleted right after.

About this tool
Reports, contracts and merged scans are hard to discuss without page numbers. "See the table on page 7" only works when every page carries its number. Adding them at the end, after you have merged and reordered everything, gives you numbering that matches the final file.
The tool measures every page of your PDF, draws a number for each one and places it on top using qpdf, so the original content is not changed. Pages of different sizes are handled one by one. Pick bottom centre for a classic look, bottom right for reports, or top for letterheads where the footer is busy. The numbers use the Helvetica font in black.
Start at any number if the PDF is part of a larger document, for example 11 when it continues a previous file. The "Page 1 of 10" style counts the total from the file and follows the start number. If a page already has content where the number would go, move the position or add a margin to your source. Uploads can be up to 20 MB and 500 pages.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the start number, for example 5, and the first page shows 5, the next 6, and so on. This helps when the PDF continues another document.
Where can the numbers go?
Choose bottom centre, bottom right, bottom left, top centre, top right or top left. Numbers sit about 28 points (10 mm) from the page edge. If that area is busy, pick another position.
Does adding numbers change my existing content?
No. The numbers are stamped on top of each page as a separate layer, so existing text and images are not changed or recompressed.
Can I number only some pages?
Not in this version. All pages are numbered. To number a part, split it out with the Split PDF tool, number it, and merge it back with Merge PDF.
Is my PDF stored?
No. Your file is written to a private temporary folder, processed for the length of the request and deleted straight after, whether the job worked or not. We do not keep copies, build a library of uploads or read the content of your documents.
