About this tool
A PDF looks the same on every device, which is why contracts, quotations, résumés and reports are sent as PDF rather than as editable files. Converting a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file gives you a version that cannot be reflowed by the reader's software and that any phone or portal can open.
The conversion runs on LibreOffice, a free office suite, in headless mode on our server. It reads DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF, PPT, PPTX, ODP, XLS, XLSX, ODS and, where the installed version supports it, EPUB. The type is checked from the content of the file, not only from its name. Fonts that are not installed on our server are swapped for similar ones, so line breaks and page breaks can differ a little from Microsoft Office. Check the PDF before you send it.
Some formats are not supported. CHM help files cannot be opened by LibreOffice, so those old chm2pdf style requests cannot be served here. Password protected documents and files with macros that must run are not converted. Each run is limited to 20 MB and 60 seconds, and each visitor can convert 20 files per hour. For text or pictures you already have, the Text to PDF and Images to PDF tools are quicker.
Frequently asked questions
Which file types can I convert?
DOC, DOCX, ODT and RTF documents, PPT, PPTX and ODP presentations, and XLS, XLSX and ODS spreadsheets. EPUB books work when the LibreOffice version on the server can read them. CHM help files are not supported.
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word file?
Usually very close, but not always identical. The conversion uses LibreOffice, and fonts that are missing on our server are replaced by similar ones, which can shift line and page breaks. Check the PDF before sending it. Using common fonts reduces differences.
Can I convert a password protected file?
No. The converter cannot open documents that need a password. Remove the password in the program that made the file, then upload the copy.
Why is a spreadsheet split over many pages?
A PDF has fixed pages, so a wide spreadsheet is cut at the page width, as it would be when printed. Set the print area and fit-to-page options in the spreadsheet before converting if you want it on fewer pages.
Are my documents stored?
No. The file is converted in a private temporary folder and deleted when the request ends, whether the conversion worked or not. We do not keep or read your documents.
