About this tool
Roman numerals use seven letters: I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1,000. Letters are added from largest to smallest, except where a smaller letter comes before a larger one and is subtracted, so IV is 4 and IX is 9. The standard form, which this tool produces, never repeats a letter more than three times in a row, so 4 is IV and not IIII, and 1994 is MCMXCIV.
Dates are usually written by converting the day, the month number and the year separately, then joining them with dots, dashes or slashes. A wedding on 25 December 2026 becomes XXV.XII.MMXXVI. Put the day first, as most of the world does, or switch to the American month-first order with the date order option for slash dates. The tool shows the year alone as well, which is what film credits and building cornerstones traditionally use.
The system has no zero and no way to write numbers above 3,999 in the plain form, so the converter stops there. When you are checking a numeral you found on a clock face or a monument, remember that older work sometimes uses IIII for 4. This tool reads that form when converting to a number, but warns that it is not the standard spelling.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write 2026 in Roman numerals?
2026 is MMXXVI: MM for 2,000, XX for 20 and VI for 6. Break a number into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones, write each part with the Roman letters, and join them from the largest to the smallest. The converter does this for any number from 1 to 3,999.
How do I write a date in Roman numerals?
Convert the day, the month number and the year, then join them with a separator. For 14 February 2027 that is XIV.II.MMXXVII. Enter the date in the date box, pick the date order for slash dates, and the tool prints dot, dash and slash versions that you can copy.
Why is there no zero in Roman numerals?
The Roman system was built for counting and recording things that exist, so it had no symbol for nothing. The word nulla was used in writing instead. For dates, the day and month always start at 1, so only the year needs care, and a year of zero does not occur in the calendar we use.
What is the largest number I can convert?
The plain Roman system reaches 3,999, written MMMCMXCIX. Larger numbers were written with a bar over a numeral to multiply it by 1,000, but that notation is not part of ordinary text, so this tool stays within 1 to 3,999 and tells you when a number is out of range.
Is IIII a valid way to write 4?
IIII appears on many clock faces and in some historic inscriptions, but the standard modern spelling is IV. The converter reads IIII as 4 and flags it, then shows the standard form IV so you can use the correct version in new work.
