Free Percentage Calculator

A percentage calculator answers the common percent questions in one place: what is 15% of 800, what percent is 45 of 60, how much did a value change between two numbers, and what is a price after a 20% rise or discount. Pick the question, enter two numbers and read the result with the working shown underneath.

About this tool

Choose the question that matches your problem. "What is X% of Y" finds a share, such as a 18% tax on a bill or a 10% commission on a sale. "X is what percent of Y" turns a part and a whole into a percentage, for example 45 completed tasks out of 60. "Percentage change" compares an old value X with a new value Y and tells you the rise or fall as a percent of the old value, which is how growth in traffic, sales or price is normally reported.

Increase and decrease do the opposite job: they start from a value Y and apply a percentage X to get the new price or total. A 20% discount on 2,500 gives 2,000. Note that percentage changes do not cancel out. If a number rises 50% and then falls 50%, it ends 25% below where it started, because the fall is taken from a bigger base. The working shown under each answer makes that kind of step easy to follow.

For marketing reports, always say what the percentage is measured against. A click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions, a conversion rate is orders divided by visits, and a "20% increase in traffic" needs the old and new figures beside it. Showing the raw numbers next to the percentage keeps reports honest and easy for a client to check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For 15% of 800 that is 800 times 15 divided by 100, which is 120. Choose "What is X% of Y" above, enter 15 and 800, and the tool shows the answer together with these steps.

How do I work out percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is a rise of 20 on a base of 80, which is 25%. A negative answer means the value fell. The old value is always the base, so it must not be zero.

How do I find a price after a discount?

Choose "Decrease Y by X%", enter the discount as X and the original price as Y. The tool returns the sale price and the amount saved. For a 20% discount on 2,500 the sale price is 2,000 and the saving is 500. The same method works for adding a tax percentage with the increase option.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

A percent compares one value with another, while a percentage point is the plain arithmetic gap between two percentages. If a conversion rate goes from 2% to 3%, it rose by one percentage point, which is a 50% increase on the old rate. Reports should say which one they mean.

Can the result be more than 100%?

Yes. If the part is bigger than the whole, the answer exceeds 100%, for instance 150 is 250% of 60. A percentage change can also be above 100% when a value more than doubles. Only a decrease is limited, because a value cannot fall by more than 100% of itself.
