Free Page Size Checker

A page size checker measures how much data a web page makes a visitor download. This free checker fetches a page's HTML and reports its size before and after compression, whether gzip or Brotli is on, the response time, and how many images, scripts and stylesheets the page requests, then adds an estimated total page weight.

About this tool

Heavy pages load slowly on mobile data, and slow pages lose visitors before they see anything. The HTML document is the first thing a browser downloads and little else can start until it arrives, so bloated HTML (large inline scripts, huge menus, page builders repeating the same markup) delays everything that follows.

The checker fetches the page once, the way a browser would, and measures the HTML as sent over the network and after decompression, so you can see whether compression is on and how much it saves. It counts images, external and inline scripts, stylesheets and inline style blocks, and gives a verdict for the HTML alone: under 100 KB is good, 100 to 300 KB is fine, and over 300 KB is heavy.

Only the HTML is downloaded. The total page weight is an estimate built from typical file sizes for the images, scripts and stylesheets the page lists, so treat it as a range, not a measurement. For the exact figure, open your browser's developer tools, reload the page on the Network tab and read the transferred total at the bottom. The free website audit on this site adds speed, Core Web Vitals hints and the other forty checks in one report.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the size of a web page?

Enter the page URL and submit. The checker downloads the HTML and reports its compressed and uncompressed size, whether compression is on, the response time and the number of images, scripts and stylesheets the page requests, with an estimated total weight. For the exact total, use your browser's Network tab, which downloads every file.

What is a good page size?

For the HTML document alone, under 100 KB is good and up to 300 KB is fine; beyond that, look for large inline scripts, repeated markup or oversized menus. For the whole page, lighter is always better on mobile data, and correctly sized, compressed images plus fewer third-party scripts usually save the most.

How do I switch on gzip or Brotli compression?

On Apache, enable mod_deflate (or mod_brotli) for HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON and SVG. On Nginx, set gzip on with matching gzip_types, or add the Brotli module. Most hosting panels and CDNs such as Cloudflare have a simple switch for it. Text compresses very well, so HTML usually shrinks to a fraction of its size.

Why is the total page weight only an estimate?

Because the tool downloads the HTML only, not every image, script, stylesheet and font. It multiplies the number of each file type the HTML asks for by a typical size range. Lazy-loaded images, fonts and files added by scripts are not counted, so the real total can be higher or lower. Your browser's Network tab gives the exact figure.
