Free Image Format Converter

This free image format converter turns a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP picture into any of those formats and shows the file size before and after. Use it to make a WebP for a faster website, a JPG for email or a PNG that keeps transparency. Animated GIF and WebP files are converted as a still of the first frame. Uploads up to 8 MB are never stored.

About this tool

Different places want different formats. A website wants small WebP or JPG files, a logo wants PNG so the background stays clear, an older program may only open BMP, and a form may accept only JPG. Instead of installing editing software for each job, upload the picture here, pick the target format and download the converted copy.

JPG and WebP are lossy: the quality value trades file size for detail, and 75 to 90 suits most photos. PNG and BMP are lossless, so they ignore quality and produce larger files. GIF holds at most 256 colours, so photographs look banded when saved as GIF. JPG and BMP cannot hold transparency, so clear areas are filled with white. WebP and PNG keep transparency.

This converter handles still pictures. If you upload an animated GIF or animated WebP, only the first frame is converted and the result is a still image, because the server image library cannot build animations. The conversion also removes camera metadata such as GPS location and applies the photo rotation. Keep the original file, because converting between lossy formats repeatedly adds damage each time.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I choose for my website?

WebP is usually the best choice for photos and graphics because it makes smaller files than JPG at similar quality, and every current browser supports it. Use JPG as the fallback for email and old software, and PNG when you need sharp edges with transparency, such as logos.

Does converting to another format lose quality?

Converting into a lossy format such as JPG or WebP always applies some compression, controlled by the quality slider. Converting into PNG or BMP does not add loss, but it cannot restore detail already lost. For the cleanest chain, always convert from your original file.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG and BMP cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with white. GIF supports a single transparent colour at best, so soft edges can look rough. If you need a clear background, pick PNG or WebP as the target.

Can I convert an animated GIF to an animated WebP?

No. This tool converts still pictures, and for animated GIF or WebP files it uses the first frame only. The result is a single image, not an animation. For animated conversions you need a desktop program or a command line tool that can write frame sequences.

Are my files stored on your server?

No. The picture is held in memory while it is converted and discarded when the page finishes loading. It is not saved to disk or shared. The converted file shown in the result exists only on that page, so download it before you close or reload it.
