Free Favicon Generator
This free favicon generator turns an uploaded logo into the set of square PNG icons a website needs: 16, 32 and 48 pixels for browser tabs, 180 for iPhones and iPads, and 192 and 512 for Android and installable web apps. It also writes the HTML link tags and web manifest to paste in. It suits site owners who have a logo and no designer.

About this tool
A favicon is the small icon in the browser tab, in bookmarks and, on mobile, next to your site name in search results. Different places ask for different sizes: 16 and 32 pixels for tabs, 48 for some desktop and search uses, 180 for the Apple home screen icon, and 192 and 512 for Android and installable web apps. This tool makes all six from one upload, so you do not resize them by hand.
Upload a PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF of up to 5 MB, ideally a square logo of 512 pixels or more with a transparent or plain background. A non-square image is either cropped from the centre or fitted whole on a transparent square, whichever you choose. Download the files, upload them to your site root, then paste the link tags into the head of every page. The image is read in memory and is never saved on our server.
Simple shapes work best at 16 pixels: a bold letter or a single symbol. Fine detail and long text turn to mush at that size, so use a simplified version of your logo. The Apple icon looks best with a solid background, because iOS fills transparent areas with black. This tool makes PNG files only; if you need a legacy .ico file for very old browsers, convert the 32 or 48 pixel PNG with a desktop image editor.
Frequently asked questions
Which favicon sizes do I really need?
A 32 by 32 PNG for browser tabs, a 180 by 180 Apple touch icon for iOS, and 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android and installable web apps cover almost every case. The 16 and 48 pixel versions are small extras for older browsers and search results. This tool makes all six, so you can skip the ones you do not need.
Where do I put the favicon files?
Upload them to the root folder of your website, so the files sit at example.com/favicon-32x32.png and so on. Then paste the link tags from the result into the head of your pages. In WordPress, you can upload one 512 pixel image under Appearance, Customize, Site Identity as the Site Icon, and the theme adds the tags.
What size and shape should my source image be?
A square image of at least 512 by 512 pixels gives the sharpest result, because the smaller icons are made by scaling it down. A larger source is fine. If your logo is wide or tall, choose "Fit" to keep all of it, or "Crop" to fill the square from the centre.
Does Google show my favicon in search results?
Yes, on mobile and desktop, when the favicon file is crawlable and at least 48 by 48 pixels or a multiple of that size. Google updates it slowly, sometimes taking weeks. Keep the icon simple, make sure robots.txt does not block it, and use one consistent icon across your site.
Is my image uploaded and kept?
The image is sent to our server to be resized, held in memory for the few moments that takes, and discarded. It is not written to disk, logged or shared. The icons you see are generated for that page view only, so download the ones you need before you close the page.
