Grayscale removes colour and keeps brightness. Sepia adds a warm brown tone to the grayscale picture for an old photograph feel. The pencil sketch follows the classic drawing recipe: the picture is made gray, a blurred inverted copy is blended in with a colour dodge, and only the edges stay dark, which looks like pencil lines on white paper. Photos with clear outlines and good light work best. Blur softens the picture and invert makes a negative.
Brightness and contrast run after the main effect, so you can lift a dull sketch or deepen a gray photo. To keep the effects fast, pictures larger than 1600 pixels on the long side are scaled down first, and the result says when that happened. The new file has no camera metadata, and GPS location is removed. Keep your original file, since saving as JPG adds a little compression each time.

How does the pencil sketch effect work?
The picture is turned gray, then a blurred negative copy is blended over it with a colour dodge. Flat areas become white and only the edges and shadows stay dark, so the result looks like pencil lines on paper. A larger blur strength gives softer, broader strokes.
What photos make the best sketches?
Portraits and objects with clear outlines and even light work best. Busy backgrounds turn into scribbles, and very dark or very flat photos give weak lines. Raise the contrast after the sketch is made if the lines look faint, or lower the blur for sharper detail.
Is grayscale the same as black and white?
In everyday use, yes. A grayscale picture holds only shades of gray from black to white. A pure black and white image of two tones only is a different effect, usually called a threshold. You can get close by raising the contrast a lot after converting to grayscale.
Why was my picture made smaller?
The sketch and blur effects work on every pixel, so pictures larger than 1600 pixels on the long side are scaled down first to keep the page fast. The result tells you the new size. Use the image resizer afterward if you need a specific output size.
Is my photo saved on your server?
No. The photo is held in memory only while the effect is applied and is discarded when the page finishes loading. It is not written to disk or shared. The result you see exists only on that page, so download it before you leave.
