Free Image Cropper

This free image cropper cuts a picture down to the part you want. Type the left and top position plus a width and height in pixels, or pick a ratio such as 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 or 9:16 and the tool crops the largest centred area of that shape. You see a preview and can download the result. Uploads up to 8 MB are processed in memory and never stored.

About this tool

Cropping removes the parts of a picture you do not want and fixes its shape in one step. Profile photos need a square, video thumbnails need 16:9, and stories and reels need 9:16. A wrong shape gets cut off or padded by the platform in a way you do not control, so it is better to crop it yourself first.

There are two ways to crop here. Ratio presets take the largest area of the chosen shape from the centre of the photo, which is the quick way to get a square or a widescreen picture. The custom option uses pixel coordinates: x is the distance from the left edge, y is the distance from the top, and width and height set the size of the box. If the box runs past the edge, it is trimmed to fit and the result tells you.

The cropped area keeps its original sharpness, because nothing is scaled. Metadata such as GPS location is dropped when the picture is saved again, and the photo rotation is applied first so x and y match what you see on screen. Save as PNG when you need transparency, or JPG or WebP for a smaller photo. Keep the original file, because each lossy save adds a little damage.

Frequently asked questions

How do the x and y values work?

The x value is how many pixels the crop box starts from the left edge, and y is how many pixels it starts from the top edge. The point 0, 0 is the top left corner. The width and height then say how large the box is, measured from that corner to the right and downward.

Which ratio should I choose for social media?

Use 1:1 for a square post or profile picture, 4:3 for a classic photo, 16:9 for video thumbnails and wide banners, and 9:16 for stories, reels and shorts. The preset takes the largest area of that shape from the middle of your photo, so check that the subject is still in frame.

Will cropping reduce the picture quality?

Cropping itself does not blur anything, because the pixels inside the box are copied as they are. The picture only gets smaller in dimensions. Saving as JPG or WebP applies compression, so choose a high quality value or PNG if you need the cleanest possible result.

Can I move the crop box with my mouse?

Not on this page. It works with typed pixel values and ratio presets so it runs without JavaScript on any device. If you want to see where a box will fall, crop once, look at the preview, then adjust x and y and try again. Every attempt is quick and free.

Is my photo kept after I crop it?

No. The file is held in memory only while it is cropped and is discarded when the page finishes loading. Nothing is saved to disk or shared. The preview and download link exist only in your browser page, so save the cropped picture before you leave.
