Free EXIF Data Viewer

This free EXIF data viewer reads the hidden metadata inside a photo: camera and lens, date and time, exposure settings, editing software and, when present, the GPS location with a map link. Upload a JPEG or paste the address of an image on a website. It suits photographers, journalists and site owners checking what a picture reveals.

About this tool

EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. A camera or phone writes it into the photo file at the moment of capture: the make and model, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, the date and time, and, when location is on, latitude and longitude. Editors add their own entries, such as the software name. Most of it is invisible until you look, which is what this tool does.

Upload a photo of up to 5 MB, or paste the address of an image that is public on the web. The result starts with the headline facts, then shows GPS as decimal degrees with a link that opens the spot on OpenStreetMap, and finally lists every tag found. Values that are binary data, such as maker notes, are shown only as a size. The tool reads JPEG and TIFF-style metadata; most PNG, GIF and WebP files have none.

Finding no EXIF is normal: websites, social networks and messaging apps often strip it, and screenshots and graphics never had it. Metadata can also be edited or faked, so treat the date, location and device as clues, not proof. If you see GPS coordinates in a picture you plan to publish, run it through the EXIF data remover on this site first. Image URLs are fetched only if they point to a public address.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my photo show no EXIF data?

The metadata was probably removed. Social networks, messaging apps, image optimisers and many website plugins strip it, and screenshots, graphics, PNG and GIF files usually never had any. Try the original file straight from the camera or phone, not a copy that went through an app or a website.

Can a photo reveal where it was taken?

Yes, if location was on when the photo was taken and nothing stripped it afterwards. The GPS tags hold latitude and longitude, often accurate to a few metres. That is why you should clean photos of your home or children before posting them. This tool shows the position and a map link when it is present.

Is the date in EXIF always correct?

Not always. It comes from the camera clock, which may be wrong or set to another time zone, and anyone can edit it. The "date taken" is useful as a clue, but it is not proof of when a photo was made. Editing software may also add its own modified date.

Can I read EXIF from an image on a website?

Yes, paste the direct address of the image. Many sites strip the metadata, so you often see none, but files you host yourself keep it unless a plugin removes it. Only public addresses work, and images over 5 MB are refused. Upload the file instead if the address does not work.

Is my photo stored?

No. The photo is read in memory while the page loads and then discarded. It is not saved to disk or shared, and nothing about it is logged. For an image address, only the image itself is fetched, once, and not kept.
