About this tool

Photos from phones and cameras carry hidden metadata called EXIF. It can include the exact GPS position where the picture was taken, the date and time, the device model and serial number, and the software used to edit it. Many social networks remove some of this when you upload, but a website, an email attachment or a messaging app set to send the original file often keeps all of it.

The remover decodes your image and saves it again as a new file containing only pixels. Every metadata block is left behind: EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, the colour profile and embedded comments. If the photo was rotated by a camera setting, it is rotated for real first, so it does not appear sideways. Before cleaning, the result shows which kinds of metadata were found, so you know what was removed.

Because the image is saved again, a JPEG goes through one more round of lossy compression at high quality, so there can be a very small quality change and a different file size. The colour profile is dropped, which can slightly shift colours on wide-gamut photos. Uploads are limited to 5 MB and are processed in memory, never stored. Keep your original file for archives.

Frequently asked questions

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is information a camera or phone writes inside a photo file: when it was taken, the device and lens, exposure settings, the editing software and, if location is on, the GPS coordinates. It is invisible when you look at the picture, but anyone who downloads the original file can read it with a free viewer.

Why remove EXIF data before posting a photo?

To protect privacy. A photo taken at home can reveal your address through its GPS tags, and the device details and timestamps can show your habits. Removing the metadata means people who receive the file see only the picture. Businesses also remove it to keep file sizes smaller and hide the editing history.

Does removing EXIF change how the photo looks?

The picture looks the same. A JPEG is saved again at high quality, so there may be a tiny, hard to see difference, and the embedded colour profile is dropped, which can shift colours very slightly on some screens. The tool also applies the camera rotation, so the photo stays upright.

Do social networks strip EXIF data for me?

Many large platforms remove location data from the version they show publicly, but practices vary and change, and the platform itself may still receive the original. Messaging apps and email often send the full original. The safe habit is to clean photos yourself before you share them anywhere.

Is my photo uploaded and kept?

The file is sent to our server, cleaned in memory and discarded when the page finishes loading. It is not written to disk, logged or shared. The clean copy is delivered inside the result page only, so download it before you leave, and keep your original in a safe place.
