Free Line Counter

A line counter counts the lines in a text and shows which are empty or repeated. This free counter splits the total into non-empty, blank and duplicate lines, reports the longest and average line length, and can list every repeated line with its count. It is built for keyword lists, URL lists, CSV rows and log files before import.

About this tool

A line is everything between two line breaks. Blank lines are lines that are empty or hold only spaces or tabs. The duplicate count is the number of lines that repeat an earlier non-empty line, so a list with one word written three times has two duplicates. Lines are compared after trimming the spaces at each end, and ticking the case option also treats "SEO" and "seo" as the same line.

The final line break at the end of a file does not add a line, which matches how most text editors number lines. If a count looks one higher than you expected, look for a stray empty line at the top of your paste or a blank line hiding at the end of the list.

Duplicates cause real problems in SEO work. A keyword list with repeats inflates your research, and a redirect map or disavow file with repeated lines is harder to audit and easier to get wrong. Before SEO SMO HUB imports any list for a client, whether keywords for a content plan or old URLs for a redirect map, we count it here and remove the repeats.

Frequently asked questions

Does the line counter count empty lines?

Yes. The total includes every line, and the results split that total into non-empty lines and blank lines, where a blank line is empty or holds only spaces or tabs. A single line break at the very end of the text is not counted as an extra line, which matches how code editors number lines.

How are duplicate lines counted?

Each non-empty line is compared with the lines before it, ignoring spaces at either end. The first appearance is the original and every later copy counts as one duplicate. Tick "Ignore case" to treat capital and small letters as equal, and tick "Show the duplicate lines" to see each repeated line with its count and first line number.

Can I remove the duplicate lines as well as count them?

This tool reports them so you can see what repeats and where. To remove duplicates, sort the list in a spreadsheet and use its remove duplicates function, or use the "Show the duplicate lines" option here to find each repeated line and its first line number, then delete the later copies by hand in a text editor.

How many lines can I paste?

Up to 500 KB of text per run, which is tens of thousands of short lines such as URLs or keywords. Counting happens on our server and the text is never stored. For very large log files, split the file and count each part, or use a desktop tool such as wc -l on Linux and macOS.
