Free Emoji Remover

This free emoji remover strips every emoji from pasted text, including flags, skin tones, keycaps and joined sequences such as family and profession emoji, and can also remove arrows, dingbats and other symbols. It returns the clean text, counts what was removed and lists the most common ones. It suits marketers reusing social captions, editors cleaning user reviews and developers preparing text for systems that reject emoji.

About this tool

Emoji are more complicated than they look: a single flag is two "regional indicator" characters, a thumbs-up with a skin tone is two code points, and a family emoji can be seven characters joined by invisible zero-width joiners. A naive find-and-replace leaves pieces behind. This tool matches whole sequences, including the invisible variation selectors that choose the emoji or text style, so what is left is clean text with no stray boxes or joiners.

The symbols option goes further and removes non-emoji pictures that often travel with social media text: arrows, check marks, stars, bullets from the dingbat block, box-drawing characters, maths symbols and circled numbers. Ordinary punctuation, currency signs and accented letters are never touched. You can replace each removed item with nothing, which is right for emoji glued to words, or with a space, which is right when emoji were used as separators.

Common uses: reusing an Instagram caption as a web page heading, cleaning product reviews before importing them into a database that only accepts a limited character set, preparing a CSV for a system that chokes on four-byte characters, and tidying copy pasted from a chat app. The counts help you check that nothing meaningful was removed. Nothing you paste is stored.

Frequently asked questions

Why do emoji break my database import or CSV?

Most emoji are four-byte UTF-8 characters, and older MySQL databases set to the utf8 charset only store three-byte characters, so the import fails or the text is cut off at the first emoji. The long-term fix is switching the table to utf8mb4. The quick fix for a one-off import is to remove the emoji with this tool before you upload the file.

Does removing emoji from titles and meta descriptions help SEO?

Google usually strips emoji from titles and snippets in search results, so they rarely help, and they can make a title look spammy when they are not removed. Keep them in social captions where they belong, and use plain text in title tags, meta descriptions and headings. This tool gives you a clean version of a caption to reuse on the page.

Will the tool remove accented letters or other languages?

No. Letters in every script, including Hindi, Arabic, Chinese and accented Latin letters, are left exactly as they are, as are numbers, currency signs and ordinary punctuation. Only emoji sequences are removed by default, plus arrows, dingbats, maths and shape symbols when you tick the symbols option.

Why do I see empty boxes or question marks after removing emoji elsewhere?

Those are leftover parts of an emoji sequence: a zero-width joiner, a skin tone modifier or a variation selector that a simple remover did not recognise. This tool removes the whole sequence, including those invisible characters, so the boxes do not appear. If you still see one, paste the text again with the symbols option ticked.
