Add Line Numbers to Text

This free tool adds a number to the start of every line of your text. You choose the first number, the separator after it (a full stop, colon, bracket or tab), whether to pad numbers with zeros so they line up, and whether blank lines are skipped. Use it for numbered lists, scripts, legal drafts, code samples and review notes.

About this tool

Numbering happens on our server, line by line, exactly as you pasted the text: nothing inside a line is changed. Zero padding sets a minimum width, so with a width of 3 the first line reads 001 and the hundredth reads 100, and numbers longer than the width are never cut. When "Skip blank lines" is ticked, empty lines stay in place without a number and the count carries on at the next line with text.

Numbered lines make feedback precise. Instead of "the third paragraph from the bottom", a reviewer can write "line 42 needs a source". That matters most when several people comment on one document over email or chat, where there is no shared editor to point at.

SEO SMO HUB numbers the drafts, redirect maps and robots.txt changes we send clients for approval. Each comment points to an exact line, nothing gets lost between versions, and the approved version is easy to check against what finally went live.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add line numbers to text without Word?

Paste the text here, pick a start number and separator, and submit: every line comes back numbered, ready to copy into an email, a chat message or a plain text file. Unlike Word's line numbering, the numbers become part of the text, so they survive pasting into any tool, including ones that have no numbering feature.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Enter any starting number from 0 up to 1,000,000 and the tool counts up from there, one per numbered line. This is useful when you are continuing a list from an earlier document, or numbering the second half of a script separately from the first half so the two parts still read in order.

Which separator should I choose?

A full stop and space reads like a normal numbered list, a bracket suits legal and academic drafts, and a colon works well for scripts and logs. Choose tab when you plan to paste the result into a spreadsheet: the numbers land in one column and your text in the next.

Are blank lines numbered?

By default yes, so the numbers match the line positions in your original text. Tick "Skip blank lines" to leave empty lines unnumbered while keeping them in place; the count then continues at the next line that has text, which reads better for lists and scripts separated by spacing.
