Favicon Checker

This free favicon checker loads a page, finds every icon it declares (favicon links, Apple touch icons, mask icons and the web app manifest), requests each file and reports its status, declared size and real pixel size. It then lists what is missing, such as a 180 pixel touch icon or a 512 pixel manifest icon.

About this tool

A favicon is the small image shown in browser tabs, bookmarks and, importantly for SEO, next to your listing in Google's mobile search results. When it is missing or broken, the result shows a generic globe, which looks less trustworthy beside competitors. Google asks for a favicon that is a multiple of 48 pixels square and reachable by its crawlers.

The checker reads the head of your page for icon links, the Apple touch icon and the manifest file, and also tests the old default location, /favicon.ico. It fetches up to eight icon files and measures their true dimensions, which can differ from the sizes written in the HTML. A table lists each file with its status code, declared size, real size and file weight.

Missing icons are shown as findings with a suggested size. The check covers what is declared in the HTML and the manifest; it cannot see icons that a browser or operating system requests in other ways. If a favicon works in your browser but not here, check that robots.txt does not block the icon file and that the server does not need a cookie to send it.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a favicon be for Google?

Google asks for a favicon that is a multiple of 48 pixels square, such as 48, 96 or 144, in any format the browser supports, on a stable URL its crawlers can fetch. A single square image of 192 or 512 pixels in PNG or SVG, linked from the head, is a practical choice.

Do I still need favicon.ico?

Many tools and older crawlers still request /favicon.ico by default, so keeping one avoids needless 404 errors in your logs. Modern browsers use the icon links you declare. A small ICO in the site root plus a PNG or SVG link in the head covers both.

Why does my favicon not show in Google results?

Google updates favicons slowly, sometimes taking weeks. Check that the icon link is in the head of the home page, the file returns status 200, robots.txt does not block it, it is square, and it is not a generic or inappropriate image. Request indexing of the home page after fixing it.

What is the web app manifest and why does it have icons?

The manifest is a JSON file that tells browsers how to install your site as an app on a phone. It lists icons, normally 192 and 512 pixels, used on the home screen and splash screen. Sites without an app experience can skip it, but a valid manifest is a small plus.
