About this tool

A slug is the last part of a page address, such as /blog/how-to-write-meta-descriptions. A good slug is short, readable and says what the page is about, so people understand it in search results and when it is shared. Google treats hyphens as word separators and does not treat underscores that way, which is why hyphens are the default here.

The generator lower-cases each title, converts accented letters to plain ones (café becomes cafe), removes punctuation and emoji, and joins the remaining words. The stop-word option drops common filler words (a, the, of, and), which usually keeps the main keywords and shortens the link. The length cap cuts at a whole word, never in the middle of one, so a long title does not end in half a word.

Use it when you plan a batch of URLs, publish in a CMS that builds ugly slugs, or tidy an old site. Slugs written in languages that use non-Latin letters become empty here, because only plain letters and digits are kept; write those slugs by hand or transliterate first. Once a page is live, avoid changing its slug without a 301 redirect, or you lose its rankings and links.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a URL slug be?

Short enough to read at a glance: three to five words and under about 60 characters is a good target. Google can handle far longer URLs, but short slugs are easier to share and less likely to be cut off in search results. Keep the main keyword near the start and drop filler words that add nothing.

Hyphens or underscores in a slug?

Use hyphens. Google reads a hyphen as a space between words, so best-seo-tools is understood as three words, while underscores can join them into one long unreadable word. Underscores are fine for internal code and file names, but for public URLs hyphens are the safe, standard choice.

Should I remove stop words from slugs?

Often yes, when the slug stays clear without them: how-to-write-a-meta-description becomes write-meta-description. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning or makes the slug unreadable. Stop words do not harm rankings, so the goal is only a shorter, cleaner link, not a keyword trick.

Can I change a slug after the page is published?

You can, but you must add a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one, or visitors and search engines hit an error page and the page loses its rankings and backlinks. If the page has never been indexed or linked, changing the slug is safe. Otherwise leave it alone unless there is a real reason.

What happens to non-English titles?

Accented Latin letters are converted to plain ones, so a title in French, Spanish or German works. Letters from scripts such as Hindi, Arabic or Chinese are not transliterated, so a title written only in them gives an empty slug. Write an English slug for those pages by hand.
