Free CSS Minifier

This free CSS minifier strips comments, line breaks and extra spaces from a stylesheet and drops the final semicolon in each rule, then shows how many bytes you saved. Quoted strings and url() values are protected, and licence comments that start with an exclamation mark can be kept. It suits anyone who wants a smaller stylesheet without installing a build tool.

About this tool

A stylesheet blocks rendering: the browser will not paint the page until the CSS in the head has downloaded and parsed. Cutting its size is one of the simplest speed improvements, and minifying removes only characters the browser ignores, so the page looks the same.

The minifier removes comments, collapses whitespace, strips the spaces around braces, semicolons, commas and child combinators, and removes the semicolon before a closing brace. Text inside quotes and inside url() is left alone, and comments that begin with an exclamation mark are preserved when you choose to keep licence notices.

It does not merge rules, rename classes or remove unused CSS, so the output is always a faithful copy of your rules. Keep the readable file in your project and publish the minified one. To read minified CSS again, use the CSS beautifier. Nothing you paste is stored.

Frequently asked questions

Can minifying CSS break my design?

Not when only comments and whitespace are removed. This tool keeps strings and url() values as they are. If the page looks different after publishing, the cause is usually an old cached file, so clear the cache or add a version number to the file name.

What is the difference between minifying and compressing?

Minifying rewrites the file so it has fewer characters. Compression such as gzip or Brotli is applied by the server while sending the file. They work together: minify first, then let the server compress, and the visitor downloads the smallest possible version.

Does it remove unused CSS?

No. Removing unused rules needs a crawl of your real pages, because a rule that looks unused may style a menu or a popup that appears later. This tool only shrinks what you paste, so every rule you wrote stays in the output.

Why keep licence comments?

Many libraries ask that a short notice stays in the file. By convention these comments start with an exclamation mark. Tick the option to keep them and they stay in the output while all other comments are removed.
