Free Blacklist Scanner

A blacklist scanner checks whether a domain or the server behind it appears on spam blocklists that mail servers and security filters consult. This free scanner looks up the site's IP addresses on ten IP blocklists, including Spamhaus, SpamCop and Barracuda, and the domain on the Spamhaus and SURBL domain lists, then explains what each listing means.

About this tool

Blocklists, also called DNSBLs, are databases that mail servers and security filters query before they accept a message or a link. An IP address gets listed when it sends spam or hits spam traps, often because a site was hacked or a shared server has a bad neighbour. A domain gets listed when it appears in spam, phishing or malware. Listings mostly hurt email delivery, but domain listings also make some browsers, firewalls and filters block the website.

The scanner resolves the domain to its public IPv4 addresses, checks up to three of them, and asks each list through ordinary DNS lookups, the same way mail servers do. Each row says listed, clean, no answer or query refused. Some lists refuse queries that arrive through large public DNS resolvers, and a few stop answering at busy times, so "no answer" means we could not tell, not that the address is listed.

If you are listed, fix the cause first: clean up malware, close open mail relays, reset stolen passwords, then request removal on each list's website. Google Safe Browsing is not included, because it needs an API key; check it in Google's Transparency Report. SEO SMO HUB runs this scan as part of every hacked-site cleanup and before a client starts an email or SMS campaign.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my domain is blacklisted?

Enter the domain and submit. The scanner resolves it to its server IP addresses and queries ten IP blocklists plus two domain blocklists, showing listed, clean, no answer or refused for each. For email problems, also check the IP your mail actually sends from, which is often your email provider's server rather than your website's.

My website is on a blacklist. What should I do?

Find the cause before asking for removal, or you will be listed again: scan the site for malware, update the CMS and plugins, change passwords, and check the server for scripts sending mail. Then follow the removal link on the list's own website. Many lists, such as SpamCop and UCEPROTECT level 1, remove entries automatically once the spam stops.

Does being on a blacklist affect SEO?

Mostly indirectly. Search engines do not use email blocklists as a ranking factor, but the problem behind a listing, such as malware or a hacked site sending spam, can get the site flagged by Google Safe Browsing and hurt traffic badly. Domain lists like Spamhaus DBL can also make security tools block visits.

Why does a list show "no answer" or "query refused"?

Some blocklists refuse lookups that come through large public DNS resolvers, and others limit how many free queries they accept. When that happens we cannot tell whether the address is listed, so we say so instead of guessing. Check that list on its own website, where most of them offer a free lookup form.
