Free Binary Translator
A binary translator converts text into the numbers computers store and back again. Type a word and this free tool shows its binary, octal, decimal (ASCII) and hexadecimal codes side by side. Paste codes to turn them back into text, or switch to the number mode to convert a single number between binary, octal, decimal and hex.

About this tool
Computers store text as numbers. In ASCII the capital letter A is 65, which is 01000001 in binary, 101 in octal and 41 in hexadecimal. This tool converts every byte of your text into each of those four bases. Text outside basic ASCII, such as accented letters, Hindi or emoji, is stored as several UTF-8 bytes, so one character can give two to four codes. Each code is shown separated by a space so you can read and copy it easily.
To decode, choose the base of your codes and paste them. Codes may be separated by spaces, commas or new lines. Binary and hexadecimal can also be pasted as one unbroken string, which is split into 8-bit or 2-digit pieces, so 0100100001101001 and 4869 both decode to Hi. If the bytes do not form valid text, the tool tells you instead of showing garbage. The number mode converts one whole number between the four bases, with a limit of about 9 quintillion.
Binary translators are used in computer science classes, puzzle and escape-room clues, debugging encoded data and understanding how character encoding works. They are not encryption: anyone can reverse the conversion, so do not use binary or hex to hide sensitive text. For hiding data in transit use proper encryption, and for web safe text use Base64 or URL encoding instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert text to binary?
Choose "Text to codes", type or paste your text and translate. Each character is turned into its byte value and shown as an 8-digit binary code. For example, "Hi" becomes 01001000 01101001. The same result is also given in octal, decimal and hexadecimal so you can copy whichever base you need.
How do I convert binary back to text?
Choose "Codes to text", select Binary as the base and paste the 0s and 1s. Groups can be separated by spaces or pasted as one long string, which is read 8 digits at a time. The decoded text appears below. If the result is not valid text, the tool says so.
What is the difference between ASCII and UTF-8 here?
ASCII covers 128 characters: English letters, digits and common symbols. UTF-8 is a superset that stores other characters using two to four bytes. For plain English text, the codes shown are the ASCII codes. For other scripts and emoji, you see the several UTF-8 bytes that make up each character.
Can I convert a number between binary and hex?
Yes. Choose "Number base converter", enter the number, pick the base it is written in and translate. You get the same value in binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal. Hex digits can be typed in upper or lower case, and prefixes such as 0x and 0b are accepted.
Is binary a way to hide or encrypt a message?
No. Converting text to binary is just a change of notation, and anyone with a translator can reverse it instantly. It is fine for puzzles and learning. Use real encryption for private information, and never rely on an encoding to protect a password or personal data.
