Free HTML to Markdown Converter
This free converter turns HTML into clean Markdown. Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, links, images, ordered and unordered lists, blockquotes, code blocks, horizontal rules and simple tables are all converted, while scripts, styles and unknown wrapper tags are dropped. It suits writers moving a web page into a README, a notes app or a static site that uses Markdown files.

About this tool
Moving content out of a CMS usually means copying HTML full of wrapper divs, inline styles and classes. Markdown keeps only the structure that matters: headings, emphasis, links and lists. Converting it with a tool is faster than retyping, and avoids the mess a plain paste creates.
The converter reads your HTML into a document tree, so it works on the structure rather than on guesses from patterns. Tags it does not know are removed but their text is kept. Nested lists keep their levels, tables become pipe tables, and links and images keep their addresses. Script and style elements are never included, and nothing is fetched from the web.
Expect to review the result. Markdown cannot express everything HTML can, such as colours, columns or buttons, so those are flattened to text. Complex tables with merged cells are simplified to a basic grid. Nothing you paste is stored.
Frequently asked questions
Which HTML tags are converted?
Headings, paragraphs, line breaks, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, images, ordered and unordered lists, blockquotes, inline code, preformatted code, horizontal rules and tables. Other tags are removed but the text inside them is kept.
What happens to scripts, styles and inline CSS?
Script and style elements are dropped completely, and inline style attributes, classes and ids are ignored because Markdown has no place for them. Only the content and the structure carry over to the Markdown output.
Can I convert a whole web page by URL?
This tool converts HTML that you paste. Open the page, view its source or copy the section you need, and paste it here. Pasting only the article body gives a cleaner result than pasting a full page with menus and footers.
Why does my table look simple in Markdown?
Markdown tables have one row of headers and plain cells. Merged cells, nested tables and styling cannot be kept, so the converter writes a basic grid from the first row of header or data cells. Edit the result by hand if the original layout was complex.
