Free Find and Replace Tool

A find and replace tool swaps every occurrence of one piece of text for another. Paste your text, enter what to find and what to put in its place, and this free tool returns the changed text with a count of replacements. It handles plain text, whole words and regular expressions, which makes bulk edits to copy, code and exports quick and checkable.

About this tool

In plain mode the text you type is matched exactly as written, including punctuation, so a full stop or bracket is just a character. Tick "ignore case" to match upper and lower case alike, and "whole words only" to stop "cat" matching inside "category". The count shows how many replacements were made, so you can tell at once if a find string matched nothing or far more than you expected.

Regex mode accepts a regular expression without the surrounding slashes. For example, \d{3}-\d{4} finds phone-style numbers, and ^\s+ with the multi-line option removes indentation from every line. In the replacement you can reuse parts of the match with $1, $2 and so on, after wrapping them in brackets in the pattern. The pattern is checked before it runs, and an invalid or very heavy pattern returns a message instead of an error.

Use this tool to change a brand name across a long document, fix a repeated typo, swap a domain in a list of URLs, remove tracking parameters from links, or reformat dates in an export. Always scan the result before you use it. If the count is not what you expect, narrow the pattern or switch on whole-word matching. Your text is processed once on the request and is not stored.

Frequently asked questions

How do I replace text in plain mode?

Paste your text, type the exact string to find and the replacement, keep the mode on plain text and press Replace. Every match is changed and the count is shown. Leave the replacement empty to delete the matches. Characters like dots and brackets are treated as ordinary text in this mode.

What is a regular expression?

A regular expression is a pattern language for matching text by shape rather than by exact characters, for example any run of digits or any word ending in "ing". Use it when the text you want to change varies. If you only need to replace a fixed phrase, plain mode is simpler and safer.

How do I reuse part of the match in the replacement?

Wrap the part in brackets in your pattern, such as (\d+)-(\d+), then write $1 and $2 in the replacement. For example, the replacement $2/$1 swaps the two numbers. This works in regex mode only. In plain mode a dollar sign is just a dollar sign.

Why did I get a pattern error?

The pattern is not valid, for instance a bracket was opened and not closed, or it is too complex and was stopped by a safety limit. Check brackets and escape special characters with a backslash. If the pattern is long, try a simpler version in two passes.

Does it change my original text?

No. The original stays in the box above and the changed version appears in the result below, so you can compare and copy only what you want. Nothing is saved on the server. If you want to see the differences line by line, paste both versions into the text compare tool.
