Free Word Frequency Counter

A word frequency counter shows which words and phrases appear most often in a text. Paste your copy and this free tool lists each word with its count and share of the text, for single words or phrases of two to four words, and can hide common stop words like "the" and "and" so the real topic words stand out. It helps with editing, keyword checks and research.

About this tool

Single-word counts show what a text is really about once the stop words are hidden. Two- and three-word phrases are closer to how people search, so they reveal the topics you repeat most, such as "digital marketing agency". Each row shows how many times the word or phrase appears and what percentage of all words (or phrases) that is, so you can see at a glance if one term dominates.

Use the tool on your own drafts to catch overused words, which make copy dull, and to confirm your main topic appears naturally. It is also useful on competitor copy you have permission to analyse, a transcript, survey answers or a set of reviews, where the most common terms point to what people care about. There is no right keyword percentage. Write for readers first, and treat the counts as a check, not a target.

The stop word list covers common English function words. Hyphenated words and apostrophes are kept within a word, so "long-term" and "don't" count as single words. Letter case is ignored, so "SEO" and "seo" are the same word. Set a minimum count to hide words that appear only once, which keeps long texts easy to scan.

Frequently asked questions

What is a stop word?

Stop words are very common function words such as the, and, of, to and is. They appear in nearly every English sentence and say little about the topic. Hiding them lets the meaningful words, such as product names and subjects, rise to the top of the list.

Can I count phrases instead of single words?

Yes. Choose phrases of two, three or four words. The tool counts every run of that many words in a row and lists the ones that repeat. Two- and three-word phrases are often the most useful for spotting topics and for seeing how a text matches the way people search.

How is the percentage calculated?

It is the count of that word or phrase divided by the total number of words (or phrases) counted, shown as a percentage. If stop words are hidden, the total still includes only the words that were counted, so the percentages describe the share among meaningful words.

Is there an ideal keyword percentage?

No. Search engines do not use a target density. Write naturally for people, mention your main topic where it fits, and use this tool to find accidental overuse. If one word makes up a large share of the text and reads as repetitive, vary your wording.

Does it work for other languages?

It counts words in any language written with spaces between words, including Hindi, Spanish and French. The stop word filter is English only, so for other languages leave it off. Chinese and Japanese text is not split into words.
