About this tool

A favicon is the tiny icon in a browser tab, a bookmark list and, for some sites, search results. A site without one shows a blank globe and looks unfinished. If you do not have a logo yet, a bold initial on a solid colour tile is a clean, readable stand-in that you can make in under a minute.

Type one to three letters or numbers, choose the tile colour and the text colour, pick a square, rounded or circle shape, and the tool draws all four sizes. 16 and 32 pixels are used in browser tabs, 180 pixels is the Apple touch icon for phone home screens, and 512 pixels is the large icon that web app manifests ask for. A single letter reads best at 16 pixels, so keep the text short and the contrast high.

After you download the icons, upload them to the root of your site and paste the link tags into the head of every page. Search engines generally ask for an icon in multiples of 48 pixels, so for Google search results also serve a 48 pixel or larger version. The font covers Latin letters and numbers. Emoji and other scripts are not supported. For an icon made from an existing logo image, use the favicon generator.

Frequently asked questions

Which favicon sizes do I need?

A 32 pixel PNG covers most browser tabs, 16 pixels is the classic small size, 180 pixels is the Apple touch icon used on iPhone home screens, and 512 pixels is used by web app manifests. This tool exports all four so you can pick what your site needs.

How many letters work best?

One letter is the most readable at 16 pixels. Two letters work if you choose a heavy, high-contrast colour pair. Three letters become hard to read in a browser tab, so use them only when the icon will be shown larger, such as on a phone home screen.

Can I use an emoji as the icon?

Not here. The font used to draw the letters has no emoji, so emoji are removed. If you want an emoji-style icon, make it in a design tool, or upload a logo image to the favicon generator instead, which resizes your own picture into the full icon set.

How do I add the favicon to my website?

Upload the PNG files to your site root, then paste the link tags shown in the result into the head section of each page. In WordPress, you can also set a site icon in the Customizer. After the change, clear your browser cache, because browsers hold on to old icons for a long time.

Is anything stored on your server?

No. The icons are drawn from the letters and colours you type and sent straight back to the page. Nothing is saved or shared. The PNG files exist only in your browser page, so download them before you leave or reload.
